Victory Creek Watershed Monitoring

Victory High School

Rocklin, CA

Watershed Pollution?

Students wish to determine if the local watershed stream is polluted by excessive nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and sediment.  The have raised concerns for the future of local recreational and public water supply.

The 'Victory Creek' watershed monitoring project has set aside three stream monitoring locations up and down stream from our school.  With these sites we are looking to narrow down where excessive nutrients and sediment (pollutant loads) enter stream waters and install best management practices to decrease their pollution impact.

Flood Plain

Victory Creek area also encompasses a small flood plain.  Students observed and took flood pictures after a big rainstorm last winter.  Students wish to design a water-diverting barrier to protect a future community garden area within the flood plain. Because of yearly flooding, students plan to collect more flood data next year before the barrier is constructed.  They have built and maintained two small raised flower beds on campus and wish to build six more in the flood plain area next year.

Creek Mapping

Students have discussed mapping the creek's width and depth next year using mapping and GPS phone technology.  This is in the planning stages.,

Relocation of Deer

We are aware of a deer family near our garden location.  The flood forced them out of their “bedroom.”  This re-discovery of the deer prompted a student to think about creating a garden for the deer’s consumption and to protect the species that live in these lands.
