Putah Creek 4-H Club has a four year history of studying and protecting Putah Creek where it flows past the Yolo County Housing neighborhood of Winters, CA . Previously, Club members participated in a CALFED funded creek restoration project to improve salmon spawning, learning about the creek as habitat for a variety of creatures. Those original Club members are now middle and high school students who will continue their study and exploration of their “backyard creek” in deeper detail through a draft curriculum called “Exploring Ponds”. The 20 youth will apply that learning to decrease storm-water pollution. Youth have already mapped locations of storm drains in the community and will design messages in English and Spanish regarding storm drain dumping and littering and apply the stencils. Based on their study of the creek, students will be involved in creating and implementing other service learning projects. UC Davis Environmental Education student staff and interns supervise club activities and provide mentorship. The Club has partnered with other local non-profits that provide expertise and support for service learning projects.
Project partners include Yolo County Housing Authority, Yolo County 4-H, UC Davis John Muir Institute of the Environment, Winters Joint Unified School District, and local non-profits (RISE, Inc., Tuleyome, Center for Land-based Learning and Putah Creek Council)
The Putah Creek 4-H Club is also supported by a CYFAR (Children, Youth & Families at Risk) grant from the USDA. |
