Farm and Demonstration Garden

Liberty Ranch High School

Galt, CA

There is a bare soil drainage and wetland on the campus of the newly constructed Liberty Ranch High School (LRHS) which opened in Fall 2009.  LRHS borders Estrellita Continuation High (EHS) School and is within walking distance of McCaffrey Middle School.

Students from Liberty Ranch and McCaffrey have been monitoring the project site, taking photos and keeping a log of bird sightings.  They have begun setting some project goals and developing a long-term implementation plan.  Students will have the opportunity to create, manage, and study wetland, grassland, and riparian habitat near school sites in addition to field studies to the Cosumnes River Preserve during the 2010-11 school year.  Approximately 400 K-12 students will eventually participate in the restoration project.

CalServe funding will provide staff time, teaching resources, equipment, and supplies. US Fish and Wildlife Service and Sacramento Tree Foundation have also been partners on this wetland project.  When completed the demonstration farm and wetland project will be a valuable teaching area that will provide habitat and serve more than 2,000 students per year from three different school campuses.  The site will provide an opportunity for ongoing service learning projects for students in grades 7-12 and a service learning destination site for students in grades K-12.
